Why and how did you decide to start a food business?
I started Kookies By Keirsten (KBK) in 2009 with a dream, a recipe, and audacity. After watching my mom make magic in the kitchen for years, I felt inspired to create something that combined artistry with tradition. Cookies became my canvas—a way to turn moments into memories. What began as a small home-based hobby quickly grew into a business when I saw how people lit up at personalized, handcrafted treats. That joy is what keeps me going.
How long have you been in business?
KBK has been in business for 15 years and counting! From humble beginnings at my kitchen table to being featured on FOX 2 News and partnering with brands like Savage X Fenty and Ally Financial, it’s been an incredible journey of faith, grit, and growth.
How has owning a business changed now from when you first got started?
When I started, I wore every hat—from baker to bookkeeper. Now, I’m focused on building systems, scaling intentionally, and mentoring others along the way. The stakes are higher, the vision is clearer, and the impact is deeper. KBK is no longer just about cookies—it’s about community, creativity, and creating space for others to rise through our next chapter: Project 41.
Can you please tell us about your signature items?
Our signature is custom-decorated cookies—each one is a handcrafted, edible work of art. From corporate logos to personalized baby shower sets, our cookies are designed to tell a story. We also offer interactive DIY cookie kits and gift-ready cookie boxes, making sweet memories for individuals, families, and brands alike.
“The journey won't always be sweet, but if your “why” is strong, you’ll find the strength to keep rising.”
How has utilizing the food business programming and incubator kitchen in Eastern Market impacted your growth as a business?
The food business workshops, classes, and incubator kitchen have been instrumental in KBK’s growth. Having access to a licensed commercial kitchen allowed us to move beyond the limitations of cottage law and serve clients at scale. It also connected us with fellow food entrepreneurs, which has fostered a spirit of collaboration and accountability. It’s given us the confidence and credibility to dream even bigger with Project 41.
Do you have advice for future food business entrepreneurs?
Absolutely—start with what you have and stay consistent. The journey won't always be sweet, but if your “why” is strong, you’ll find the strength to keep rising. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, invest in learning, and most importantly, create something that reflects your authenticity. Your story is your secret ingredient.
